We have to admit there's nothing very glamorous or exciting about heating oil but there are special ways in which we can improve the general performance of heating oil. The process involves the inclusion of special additives, which can help boilers burn fuel more efficiently, make them more environmentally friendly and save you money. One of the industry recognised problems, which occurs naturally in crude oil, is the level of sulphur it contains. High levels of this pollutant chemical are still evidently present, after the crude oil has been refined to produce heating oil (kerosene). However, the level must conform to acceptable British Standards (Fuel Standard BS2869C2).

It's currently very uneconomical for refineries to significantly reduce the amount of sulphur present in heating oil, as this involves hydro-treating the oil. The alternative is to add chemicals to the refined oil, which will help to reduce any pollutant levels and improve overall efficiency.

Improve Combustibility
Combustion improvers have been shown to reduce the rate of flue gas temperature increase (boiler efficiency) and reduce harmful emissions.
Suppress Odour
Heating oil can often contain a high proportion of cracked components that give the fuel an unpleasant odour. Odour masking additives are able to suppress the smell of the fuel.
Improve Cold Weather Operability
Premium heating oil additive is typically used to upgrade fuel, which has already been treated with flow improvers at a refinery. This additive normally contains a Wax Anti-settling Flow Improver.
Improve Oxidative Stability
Increasing amounts of cracked fuel components are being put into heating oil, and consequently thermal and oxidative degradation of heating oil is a recognised problem. Heating oil fuel stabiliser systems can help prevent fuel darkening, decrease deposits and reduce filter and pump blockages.
Reduce Corrosion
The heating oil storage tank is susceptible to corrosion from water that may already be present in the oil. Antirust additives help reduce rust formation in fuel storage and delivery systems. This results in reduced maintenance of pipes and tanks and reduced risk of filter blocking due to rust deposits.
